ONTARIANS WITH DISABILITIES ACT COMMITTEE UPDATE

Formal Vote on Bill 118 on Second Reading Scheduled for Thursday, December 2, 2004

November 26, 2004

SUMMARY

We have been advised that the formal vote on Bill 118, the proposed
Accessibility for Ontarians with Disabilities Act, will take place on
Thursday, December 2, 2004, in the Ontario Legislature, sometime between
1:30 p.m. and 2:30 p.m. At Second Reading, the Legislature decides whether
to approve this bill "in principle".

At that time, each political party will also make a short speech honouring
the International Day of the Disabled Person. That annual International Day
takes place on Friday, December 3. Second Reading vote on Bill 118 was
scheduled for December 2 because it is the last day that the Legislature
sits before the International Day of the Disabled Person.

We have also been advised that the Ontario Government has again arranged for
accommodations for visitors with disabilities. As Always, you can sit in the
public galleries, including the few accessible seats, on a first come, first
served basis. Once again, the Government has also arranged for an accessible
viewing room, Room 163 at the Legislature, for watching this proceeding. In
that room will be a TV with captioning, American Sign Language
interpretation, and attendant care. While this is a short proceeding, with
no further Second Reading debates to occur, we encourage you to attend if
you can. Please arrive by 1:30 p.m. For Bill 118 to pass Second Reading is
to reach an important milestone in the legislative process. You may wish to
share with the media how you feel about this milestone.

While an RSVP is certainly not mandatory, it would be helpful to get some
idea of how many people might be coming. Thus, we would appreciate it if you
would let us know. Contact us at:

oda@odacommittee.net

This proceeding will also be available for you to view in your community on
your local cable company's Ontario Legislature Channel. It will run live and
then be repeated over the evening.
