ONTARIANS WITH DISABILITIES ACT COMMITTEE UPDATE

ODA COMMITTEE RELEASES NEW DISCUSSION PAPER ON OPTIONS FOR INITIAL STEPS FOR IMMEDIATE ACTION TO STRENGTHEN ODA 2001

January 6, 2004

SUMMARY

Last month, the Ontario Government announced that it is starting a new public consultation on how to strengthen the ODA 2001. We understand that among other things, the Government is interested in knowing about short-term initial steps it can quickly take now, at low or no cost, to begin the process of strengthening the ODA.

To help you think about this, the ODA Committee is today releasing a new Discussion Paper. It offers up some options for initial low-cost steps the Government could take to begin strengthening the ODA 2001. The ODA Committee is eager for you to give your feedback on that Discussion Paper's ideas both to the ODA Committee, and directly to the Ontario Government.

MORE DETAILS

We will send you our new Discussion Paper shortly in an email. It includes a range of ideas and options for you to consider. We encourage you to:

* Send the ODA Committee feedback on this Discussion Paper, including any additional ideas you may have. Contact us at:

oda@odacommittee.net

* Let the Citizenship Minister know what you think of the options in our new Discussion Paper, and any additional ideas you have.

* Circulate our new Discussion Paper widely for others to see in order to generate more discussion and input.

The Discussion Paper only addresses options for initial, short-term, low-cost actions that the Government could take quickly to get the process of strengthening the ODA 2001 underway. This Discussion Paper is not meant to be a list of final proposals by the ODA Committee. Rather it is a set of ideas for discussion. We hope that as many individuals and organizations as possible will review these, identify ones they like, suggest improvements to them, suggest other ideas, and indicate their short-run priorities. We emphasize in offering these ideas that they are not meant as the final word in this area, and are not meant as the total list of "fixes" that the current ODA 2001 ultimately requires.
