ONTARIANS WITH DISABILITIES ACT COMMITTEE UPDATE

More All-Candidates' Debates In The Greater Toronto Area

September 23, 2003

SUMMARY

As the election grows closer, here is an update on all-candidates' debates in the Greater Toronto Area. This list supplements an earlier list we circulated, which is available on the ODA Committee website at:

www.odacommittee.net

Please go to one or more of these debates in your community, and raise disability issues like the ODA. The all-candidates' debates in London and St. Catharines this past weekend, that were organized to deal solely with disability issues, were a great success.

Have you made sure you are on the voting list? Be sure to check!

List of All-Candidates' Debates in Greater Toronto Area (416 and some 905 Ridings): Please Attend These And Raise Disability Issues Including The Need To Strengthen The Tories' Weak Unenforceable ODA

September 18, 2003

SUMMARY

Below is a list compiled by the ODA Committee of several All-Candidates' Debates being held in the Greater Toronto Area. We urge all ODA supporters to attend as many of these as possible, and to raise disability issues including the need to strengthen the ODA. If you live outside this area contact the campaign office for any candidate, to find out when and where there will be similar events in your community. Ask if they are being held in disability-accessible locations.

MORE DETAILS

The list below provides several events, divided by riding. Then several are listed for which we have incomplete information, and which are all over the place. Read through it all to find out where you might wish to attend.

ODA Committee volunteers gathered this information by phoning at least two candidates in each riding and confirming dates, times and locations as accurately as possible. They asked whether each location was accessible. Important accessibility information that was provided by the campaign office or the venue is noted in the listing. Our helpful volunteers did their best to be as accurate as possible at this point. There may be errors in this information that we did not catch. We advise you to telephone one of the candidates in the riding for confirmation of each event, because there are frequent changes to the schedule in each riding. We hope to provide more details later in the campaign to update this list. In this list, "T.B.A." Means "To Be Announced".

Raise the disability issues that matter to you. The NDP and Liberals have already made strong election commitments to strengthen the ODA in their first year in office. The Conservatives have made no commitment to strengthen the weak, unenforceable ODA. A question that you might wish to direct to Conservative candidates is as follows:

"Your government passed a weak, unenforceable Ontarians with Disabilities Act in 2001, six years after promising us a law to make Ontario barrier-free for 1.9 million Ontarians with disabilities. In this campaign, the Liberals and NDP have promised in writing to strengthen this law in their first year in office. The Conservatives have made no election commitment to strengthen this law.

Will you personally commit to support the strengthening of the ODA, even if your party has not made this commitment?

At the very least, will you commit not to oppose other parties if they move to strengthen this law?

Will you promise not to be a barrier yourself to our need for a strong, effective Ontarians with Disabilities Act? This is especially important to me in case there is a minority government."
