Dear --- insert name of MPP:

I am a voter in Ontario. I am very hurt and upset by the Bill 83, the 3 page bill your Government introduced into the Legislature on November 23, 1998. It is not worthy of the name "Ontarians with Disabilities Act". It is worthless and does not reflect any of the 11 principles contained in the resolution that you voted for on October 29, 1998.

Bill 83 does nothing for people with disabilities. It does not require a single barrier facing people with disabilities to be removed by anyone. It includes no penalties, and no way to enforce it. It even forbids the courts from enforcing it. I think that people with disabilities in Ontario deserve much better.

I am writing to ask you to speak to the Premier immediately to ask him to meet with the Ontarians with Disabilities Act Committee immediately to draft a real Ontarians with Disabilities Act and keep his promise. Your vote on October 29, 1998 for the resolution which called for a strong and effective Ontarians with Disabilities Act is meaningless unless you are prepared to tell the Premier that Bill 83 is not acceptable and that he must do more.

Your government talks alot about keeping its promises. The Premier promised an Ontarians with Disabilities Act, and to work with the Ontarians with Disabilities Act Committee to develop it. Both promises have been broken. Since he was elected the Premier has turned down every request by the Ontarians with Disabilities Act for a meeting which they have requested so that they could work with your government to pass successful legislation. That is shameful, especially when we keep hearing how your Government says that it is listening to the people. Your Government has not given us an Ontarians with Disabilities Act. You have given us a blank piece of paper.

Please show that you support the right of people with disabilities to fully participate in a barrier-free society by calling on the Premier to introduce a real Ontarians with Disabilities Act that is worthy of the name. Tell him that you want him to honour the October 29, 1998 resolution that you voted for.

As a voter who cares about people with disabilities in this province, and with an election coming up, this is very important to me, and will play an important role on how I choose to vote, and how I recommend others around me to vote. I want to hear from you on this as soon as possible. Please do not refer this letter to the Minister of Citizenship. It has become clear that she is not the person making decisions. It is up to the Premier to show leadership and show that he is prepared to keep his promises.
