ODA COMMITTEE LAUNCHES FALL 2002 ROUND OF OUR
CAMPAIGN FOR A BARRIER-FREE ONTARIO

ONTARIANS WITH DISABILITIES ACT COMMITTEE UPDATE
September 21, 2002

With the arrival of Fall 2002, the Ontarians with Disabilities Act Committee is pleased to kick off the next round in our campaign for a barrier-free ontario. The Ontario Government will be proclaiming in force most of the provisions of the Ontarians with Disabilities Act 2001 on September 30, 2002. This marks a significant point in time to swing into action.

Our goals during this round are:

  • to do whatever we can to get barriers facing people with disabilities removed and prevented by getting the Ontarians with Disabilities Act 2001 implemented.

  • to monitor action under the ODA 2001, to see what impact it has on the daily lives of people with disabilities, and

  • to get ready across Ontario to actively take part in the next provincial election (expected next year). We plan to make the need for a barrier-free Ontario a prominent issue in that election.

To help you take part in this round of our campaign for a barrier-free Ontario, we will over the next while be sending out ODA updates on several topics including:

  • a new action kit on how to use the ODA 2001 to try to get barriers removed in your community. Stand by for our new "BARRIER-BUSTERS' Action Kit". It will supplement our current "IMPLEMENT THE ODA NOW" Action Kit.

  • A review of what the Ontario Government has been doing to implement the ODA 2001.

  • Updates on what is said about the ODA in the media and in the Ontario Legislature. The Legislature resumes sitting on Monday September 23, 2002. Many think this will be the last sitting of the Legislature before the next provincial election.

  • Updates on what action is taking place at the grassroots in local communities across Ontario to get barriers against persons with disabilities removed.

  • A summary of how the ODA Committee will try to make our Emails as informative and useful as possible for you, mindful of the fact that you get tons of email from so many sources these days.

It's been over nine months since the Ontario Legislature passed the Ontarians with Disabilities Act 2001.
