Ontario Government's
New ODA Bill 125
Correspondence with Government on Bill 125
Letter to the Hon. Janet Ecker from Dwight Duncan, MPP Windsor-St. Clair
dated November 7, 2001
Honourable
Janet Ecker, MPP Dear Minister Ecker, The Minister of Citizenship has indicated that the government wishes to have the newly introduced Ontarians with Disabilities Act passed by the end of this session. We in the Liberal Caucus would like toensure that the ODA receives the committee time it warrants in order to address the needs of Ontario's disabled community. It is a very complex bill - members of the legislature and stakeholders need ample time to review this bill, prepare submissions and deliver their message to the committee. Liberal Caucus believes that in order for this legislation to be effective in providing an increased level of accessibility in Ontario, it will require numerous amendments. Therefore, after public hearings have concluded, we ask that you make certain there is sufficient time for clause-by-clause consideration of the bill. I would like to remind you again that during this session the Liberal Caucus has accommodated the passage of less controversial pieces of legislation, with the understanding that more legislative time could then be dedicated to more controversial and/or substantial bills. I hope that our agreement to cooperate along those lines will stand and you will seriously consider the recommendations I have outlined. Thank you,
