Announcing Media Conference
In Ottawa On The Ontarians
with Disabilities Act
The Ontario Association for Community Living invites everyone to
join us for an exciting media conference to be held in Ottawa on
June 1, 2001. This event is being combined with the closing
plenary of our 2001 conference and we will be inviting newspaper,
television and radio reporters to hear two of North America's
leading proponents of disability rights legislation as they call on
the Ontario government to keep its promise of bringing an effective
Disabilities Act to Ontario. Our two key presenters will be David Lepofsky, who is well known in
Ontario for his tireless push for an Ontarians with Disabilities
Act and Tony Coelho, s sponsor of the Americans with Disabilities
Act (ADA), which is considered a landmark in the history of civil
rights legislation. Mr. Coelho is Vice Chair of the U.S. National
Task Force on Employment of Adults with Disabilities, and past
chair of the President's Committee on Employment of People with
Disabilities. In his years as a Congressman in the United States
House of Representatives and as a disability rights advocate, Mr.
Coelho has played a leading role in helping people with
disabilities to exercise their rights of citizenship. We have also asked a number of key politicians to join the news
conference including Premier Harris, Liberal Leader Dalton
McGuinty, NDP Leader Howard Hampton and Minister of Citizenship,
the Honourable Cam Jackson. We are still awaiting confirmation of
the participation of these politicians. The media conference will be held on Friday June 1, 2001, 2:00
p.m., at the Crowne Plaza Hotel, 101 Lyon Street, Ottawa, Ontario.
We hope to see you there.
Please circulate this announcement widely and encourage people you
