Hon. Helen Johns
Minister of Citizenship, Culture And Recreation
6th Floor, 400 University Ave.
Toronto, ON
M7A 2R9

Dear Minister,

I am writing to you today in response to your recent interview published in the January 26, 2000 issue of Inside Queen's Park.

You stated in the interview that, "Every week I try to see a different disability group about what they want within an Act." At that rate, Minister, you will not be in a position to determine the concrete base that an effective Ontarian's with Disabilities Act requires for decades. You also do not seem to be prepared to disclose which groups you are choosing to meet with and which groups you are excluding.

Another concern that must be addressed is that you seem prepared to pre-judge the acceptability of legislation you have yet to table. It appears you are intentionally trying to lower people's expectations, undermining the entire process. I find this and your statements troubling.

I am committed to a solid and progressive Ontarian's with Disabilities Act and am prepared to work with all stakeholders, undertaking serious, thoughtful, open and public consultations to achieve that goal.

Sincerely,

Steve Peters, M.P.P.
Elgin-Middlesex-London
