ONTARIANS WITH
DISABILITIES ACT COMMITTEE UPDATE
TV ONTARIO'S
"STUDIO 2" PROGRAMME TO AIR ITEM ON DISABILITY BARRIERS
June 25, 2002
We understand
that on Wednesday, June 26 the TVO current affairs programme
"Studio 2" is supposed to include an item on barriers facing
people with
disabilities, which may focus on the Ontarians with Disabilities Act
issue.
This programme airs at 8:00 p.m. Monday to Friday and is repeated
at 11:30
p.m. the same evening and at 2:00 p.m. the following afternoon on
the TVO
channel in your community. It is seen right across Ontario.
The origin of
this item dates back to a Studio 2 item which ran a couple of
weeks ago. Studio 2 asked a panel of experts to select the best "main
street" in Ontario. The main street that they chose was Queen
Street East
in Toronto, in the Beaches area. It turns out that the experts did
not
take into account the barriers facing people with disabilities, in
determining the liveliest or most enjoyable main street area.
The Ontarians
with Disabilities Act Committee contacted Studio 2 after this
programme aired, bringing to their attention the fact that the particular
main street they chose is very substantially inaccessible to persons
with
disabilities, especially mobility disabilities. As a result, Studio
2
decided to do a follow-up, focusing on the barriers facing people
with
disabilities in getting access to the main street that had been selected.
Tune in. Encourage
others to do so. Let Studio 2 and us know what you
think of their programme. You can email Studio 2 at studio2@tvo.org
and
